Case

Automated docking system for the aviation industry.

We have supported the company TLD in developing an assistance system that makes it easier to dock Ground Support Equipment (GSE) at airports. Thanks to this automated system the heavy aircraft cargo loaders can easily and safely dock to the door of the aircraft to load or unload cargo.

This project case was carried out by Semcon, before Semcon and Knightec joined forces 2024, forming Knightec Group.

Background

TLD’s new system ASD+ (Aircraft Safe Docking Assistance System) detects the position of the aircraft door and aligns the GSE on an optimal trajectory to dock with the door on its first attempt. The ASD+ system eliminates the need for additional manoeuvring in the crowded aircraft service area.

Challenge

An airport is a sensitive and busy environment. Carrying out operations near the aircraft during turn-around time on the ground requires high precision and safety precautions.

Safer and smoother docking.

The ASD+ is an automated system that is triggered by the operator with a single button. Once ASD+ is engaged, the operator then oversees the automated docking operations, which eliminates the need for additional manoeuvring in the crowded aircraft service area.

Delivered Value

Semcon has supported TLD with the development of the perception system, which detects the position of the aircraft door area. This includes advisory in regard to hardware selection, as well as software development of the perception algorithms.
