Case

New platform replaces supplier dependency.

When Norrtåg faced a transition of its ticketing system, access to reliable data became a strategic issue. Previous supplier-driven solutions limited insight, flexibility, and development opportunities.

Background

To reduce dependence on external actors and meet future analytics needs, Norrtåg chose to establish its own internally owned data platform—without disrupting ongoing operations.

Challenge

The challenge was to build a robust and scalable data platform in parallel with an ongoing system transition, while the organization also needed to develop its own data competence and ways of working.

The opportunity lay in creating a modern architecture where Norrtåg owns and controls the entire data flow, enabling advanced analytics, increased transparency, and better decision support over time.

Enabling data-driven decisions.

Knightec Group established a cross-functional team and developed an Azure Databricks-based lakehouse architecture. Ingestion flows were set up via APIs and Kafka, with governance through Unity Catalog. The work was carried out in close collaboration with short decision paths and a strong focus on rapid production deployment.

Delivered Value

Within ten weeks, a production-ready and internally owned data platform was delivered. Norrtåg now has full control over its data flow and increased trust in its analytics. Automation has reduced manual work and created a stable foundation for continued development.
