Background
Rock wall blasting remains one of the last manual and most hazardous processes in the mining industry, requiring close human proximity to potential rockfalls and other dangers. ABB sought to minimize human presence in these dangerous environments by developing the Robot Charger, an automated solution to enhance safety and efficiency.
Challenge
For this solution to be effective, it required a user-friendly interface that could enable remote control and provide precise information to operators. ABB needed a partner to develop a custom Android tablet with integrated software to meet this need.
An Android tablet with specialized software.
The project was carried out in two phases—an initial study followed by agile implementation—enabling flexibility and continuous alignment with ABB’s needs. Close collaboration between design and software teams, supported by workshops and regular feedback, ensured a user-centered and efficient development process.
This resulted in a custom Android tablet with integrated software, designed as an MVP to remotely control and monitor the automated Robot Charger. The intuitive interface enabled precise operation while reducing complexity, demonstrating clear time and cost efficiencies in mining operations.
