Case

Modular platform modernises indoor climate systems.

As the Nordic market leader in indoor climate solutions, Swegon set out to modernise its existing Wise 1 platform. The ambition was to create a more flexible and scalable system built on wireless mesh radio technology and prepared for future demands.

Background

The new platform, Wise 2, was designed around Linux-based units for monitoring, control, and local regulation. The system combined web-based management with distributed control across buildings and floors, creating a significantly more advanced technical foundation than the previous generation.

To meet an aggressive timeline ahead of the Nordbygg trade fair in Stockholm 2016, Swegon needed to strengthen its development capacity and accelerate delivery.

Challenge

The challenge was to develop a scalable and reliable platform architecture while simultaneously building a completely new generation of hardware and software.

The opportunity lay in creating a modular system architecture capable of supporting future functionality, large-scale installations, and long-term product evolution without disrupting customer operations.

Building a scalable Linux-based architecture.

Knightec Group established a dedicated development team in Gothenburg working closely with Swegon’s engineers in Kvänum. Development focused on autonomous modules integrated into a complete Linux image, with strong emphasis on flexibility and scalability.

ZMQ was implemented for internal process communication and MQTT for communication between Linux devices, enabling a distributed architecture that remains in operation nearly ten years later. The project also addressed one of the system’s most critical needs: a robust and reliable software update mechanism for large-scale deployments.

Delivered Value

The new Wise 2 platform was successfully delivered in time for Nordbygg 2016, where Swegon launched the next generation of its indoor climate solution.

Today, the system is installed in around 2,000 properties across northern Europe, supporting installations with thousands of connected devices. The modular architecture enables continuous feature development and reliable software updates without loss of historical data, creating long-term flexibility for both Swegon and its customers.
