Background

Climate change is affecting companies across multiple dimensions, from raw material availability and production to markets, financing and long-term competitiveness. To better understand these dynamics, Sunpine, the world’s leading producer of crude tall diesel, partnered with Knightec Group to conduct a climate scenario analysis.

Challenge

Sunpine produces renewable raw materials based on crude tall oil and operates an industrial facility in Piteå, where by-products such as bio-oil, rosin and alpha-pinene are further refined. With a business model closely linked to both forest-based value chains and global energy markets, understanding future climate-related risks and opportunities is central to maintaining competitiveness.

Understanding climate impact across time horizons.

Knightec Group supported Sunpine through a structured climate scenario analysis based on two established pathways: a low-emissions scenario aligned with the Paris Agreement and a high-emissions scenario. The analysis covered short-, medium- and long-term horizons and combined climate data, scenario modelling and value chain perspectives.

The work focused on identifying both physical risks, such as climate-related disruptions, and transition-related factors including regulatory changes and evolving market conditions—linking strategic insights to concrete implications across operations, supply chains and production.

Delivered Value

The analysis helps Sunpine understand climate-related impacts across its value chain and prioritise investments and opportunities. By integrating the insights into business processes, the company strengthens resilience and takes a more proactive, long-term approach.
